We did not do much this week since we were at a state park in PA and everything seemed to be closed (the water wasn’t even turned on at our site). I asked on Facebook what you all wanted too read about and here are your questions!
Cooking in the camper (what are we eating?)
If you know me, you know how much I LOVE my Instant Pot and you’ll be surprised to know that I have not used it much since we moved into the camper. Everything I hear about the camper ovens are that they don’t work and they are pretty much like an easy bake oven. I haven’t tried ours yet. Since we have been bookdocking a lot on in our travels, I have been looking for one pot meals (on the stove, since we always have propane, but not electricity) and I have found quite a few one pot skillet meals that we have enjoyed. Last night I made Boursin Chicken. It was onion, chicken broth, boursin cheese, and chicken. I was pretty amazing. Brian’s favorite one pot meal is taco mac n cheese. It’s a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, ground turkey, can of diced tomato, and shredded cheddar. It’s pretty good. Anyways, I can talk recipes all day, but I won’t bore you. I found these recipes on the YouTube. Maybe I’ll build a recipes page on here and post our favorite recipes.
What do you guys do in your down time?
Since we are both not working currently, we are pretty boring. Our typical day starts with us laying in bed until the dogs want to go outside (around 9:30am lazy dogs!) and then we walk them. Then we come back and get ready for the day. Brian typically works on his website, while I cook breakfast, clean, and browse the interwebs. If we have a trip, I am planning our route. Then we have dinner, walk the dogs again, and watch movies until we go to sleep. I told you, we are pretty boring. We weren’t as boring when we were in Florida and the weather was nicer.
As you go on your journey, what have you found you need for your camper and what don’t you need for your camper?
You cannot have enough organization totes/baskets and COMMAND STRIPS/HOOKS. Brian say’s I am a command hook junkie. You have to think about it, we are driving down the highway at 70 mph and our home is behind us! It goes through an earthquake, basically, while we travel, so we have to keep everything contained as much as possible. Our cabinets are filled with totes that we keep our things in and when we get to our next stop, we just have to put the tote back in it’s correct location. We don’t open our cabinets to have everything fall out onto us. Command hooks are great since you don’t get much storage and you can hang things on the walls. I have command strips holding up canvas photos, hats, jackets and dog leashes. I’ll be posting a tour of our camper once we are settled in Maine.
Essentials are surge protector (we highly recommend the Power WatchDog brand), black tank hose, fresh water hose (THESE MUST BE SEPARATE, please do not hook up your fresh water hose to your black tank flush!), water filters, stinky slinky, wheel chocks, leveling system (or just a plain ole level will work too), and water pressure regulator. That is all I can think of right now, but every camper is different and will need different things. I also would recommend Beddy’s Bedding if you are going to be camping a lot. It will make your life so much easier. And an outdoor rug if you have dogs or kids so that they don’t track dirt into the camper. That also reminds me, a cordless stick vacuum is one of my essentials.
What we thought we needed, but don’t… we haven’t come across anything yet.
How long do you plan on doing this?
We plan on living this lifestyle as long as we are able. We have discussed buying a piece of land that we can park the camper on with water and electric hook-ups if we ever need to stop traveling. My goal is to see all the National Parks within the US (maybe not in the camper for all of them, we cant drive to Hawaii).
That is all for this week! Next week we will be arriving in Maine for our home for six months!
