I realize that I have not talked about my seasonal job up here in Maine much since I started, so I will talk about it today.
I am considered a customer service representative, but I don’t feel like it is a customer service position. It’s a fun job and I get to meet people everyday that I would not typically meet at an “ordinary” 9-5 job. This week I met a woman, she was with her husband and a young girl, that had an 814 area code and I asked her where she was from since that area code sounded familiar to me. She was from Erie, PA. I told her that I was from Pittsburgh and she asked how I made it up to Maine to work for the summer. I told her the story how we sold our house and live in our camper and travel. She told me that I was very blessed to be able to do this. She raised her children and her sister’s children after she had passed. She now has 17 grandchildren and full custody of the youngest one. Her and her husband always wanted to travel, but haven’t been able to. Once the granddaughter they have custody of got out of school for the summer, they started traveling. They were two months into their three month trip.
Hearing her talk really made me realize that Brian and I are really lucky to have been able to start this journey when we did. Life throws you unexpected curve balls all the time, and we have to just deal with them along the way.
Back to the job, I really can say that I love my job. I did love my previous job when we lived in the house, but that was a different type of love. This job, is fun and I don’t feel like I am working, even on cruise ship days when there are three to four thousand people coming into Bar Harbor. I get compliments about how patient and polite I am, which if you know me is NOT always the case (Brian will tell you all about it). The best part of this job, I feel APPRECIATED every single day, even when I make mistakes, big mistakes.
Another plus to this job, is my co-workers. I work with some of the best people. We all get along very well, but you know there is always the one person no one really likes, but we deal with that person the best way we know how. I made lasting friendships at my previous jobs, and I know I will make more at this job.
On my way home from work one day this week, I was in traffic that was backed up a lot more than usual and I was on my Vespa. I heard sirens and realized there was an accident, so I turned off the Vespa and grabbed my phone to text Brian that I was in traffic because of an accident and I was ok. I saw there was a message from my co-worker asking if I was ok because she heard that there was an accident on the road I was on and there was a Vespa involved. The person on the Vespa ended up being another girl that I work with, her friend’s husband. He is ok, but really banged up. The week before, a guy that was on a motorcycle died in the same area of road, so I am a little uneasy taking my Vespa to work now. The point is that it was nice to know there are people I work with that are looking out for me, even when I am not at work.
I went to the movies with a couple girls from work to see Barbie, so that Brian did not have to go. Last night I had a little get together with a few co-workers. I invited the employees that are staying in the same campground as us over for a cookout. We made burgers, hot dogs, chicken, and pasta salad. It was a fun time. Brian doesn’t get human interaction too much since our neighbors to the right work night shift and sleep during the day, to the left they are park rangers, and seem to only talk with the other park rangers in the campground.
I love this job and I love my co-workers. Life is good!
Update from last week’s post, Brian came up with a clever way to put the curtains up. I told him to write a DIY post about it, but he hasn’t yet.
