We left Maine and drove down into Connecticut. We stayed overnight at a KOA right off of 95, so there was nothing really to see. We left that KOA and went to a Harvest Host location in Albrightsville, PA, Spruce Ridge Reindeer Farm. This is what I was really excited for!
When we arrived, the owner, Cassandra, was working, so we did not get to see much of the reindeer, but we did get acquainted with the dogs, Denali and Max. They are the dogs that keep the reindeer safe from coyotes and other animals. There were also guinea fowls that they let loose to avoid the reindeer getting ticks. And of course cats to keep the mice and other rodents away.
The next morning, we woke up and took a tour of the reindeer farm. I learned a lot while we were here. Did you know that Reindeer are domestic animals? Yes! Cassandra hooks them up to a lead and walks them just like you would walk a dog. She even gave them kisses when she left them. They are very friendly, but stay clear during mating season. She just moved to this farm in March, so it was still a work in progress, so we will definitely be visiting this location again.
There were many walking trails around the property and the dogs enjoyed all the niffs. I enjoyed the scenery and the quiet (well, mostly quiet, it was on a main road). The reindeer are enclosed in eight foot high fence. Outside of their fence is the dog run. The dog run, a fully fenced in area so that the dogs have access to the entire outside of the reindeer enclosure. The cats run free throughout the enclosures and barns. They did come up to us and rubbed up against us for love.
It was a fun time and we will be back to visit this amazing Harvest Host location again.
We left the farm and headed west back to Pittsburgh, PA and will be here for a few weeks to visit family, empty our storage unit (anyone need a wedding dress?), and then we will make our way down to Florida. I did get my hair colored and cut, which I was needing all summer and I love it! I also gave Brian a hair cut.
