One of the most asked questions I got when I told people that we were going to sell our house and move into our travel trailer was, what about health insurance? Well, I was not sure, but I knew there were options for full-time RV’ers. I feel I have accomplished a lot of life stuff this winter, insurance being one of them.
I would like to start off by saying this, insurance is not all its cracked up to be. I went to the eye doctor this week, without insurance. The office I went to is a franchise, called MyEyeDr. I went to them when I lived in our house as well. They have real eye doctors, not just the ones that can tell you if your prescription has changed. I get the optomap done on my eyes since I have family history of eye problems and this place is the best, in my opinion. I looked on their website before my appointment to see what my options were since I did not have eye insurance. They had a few deals, but only one that included the eye exam. It was $199 for a pair of eyeglasses or a years worth of contact lenses plus an eye exam. I got my receipt when I left. If I had insurance, my insurance company, would have paid $652 dollars, I paid $223 cash for the optomap, eye exam, and a pair of designer frames. Yes, I saved over $400 by NOT having insurance.
I did find nationwide health insurance. When I was working this past summer, I asked Brian to look around and make some calls to see if we could get a quote. He says he didn’t have any luck… Anyways, I started looking at state health insurance through Florida since we are Florida “residents”, but it was almost $500 a month for just me… Fast forward to 3 weeks ago, Brian’s phone rang and he said oh it’s that insurance lady calling me again. I said answer it. He did and I spoke to her. She sent me a few quotes and for both Brian and I. I got a NATIONWIDE plan for $327 a month, yes for both of us, $327 total a month. That is almost half of what I was paying for just me when I had a traditional job insurance. If you would like more information on this insurance for yourself, send me an email, or comment below and I will gladly give you the contact I used.
I did purchase dental insurance, but it can only be used in Florida and I called to get an appointment and no openings until November. I might look into something better soon.
I also got life insurance policies for the both of us. You are never too young to look into it, so I did and I am glad I did. I got a pretty good deal for the both of us. The downside to life insurance is now Brian holds it against me saying I am going to kill him for the money (DISCLAIMER, he jokes a lot, I would never hurt him, on purpose). I know this blog is getting dark, but I like having a plan in place no matter what happens. I think about these things and I think everyone should. Tomorrow is never promised.
On happier note, I have our trip back up to Maine all planned out. We will be staying at Harvest Hosts the whole way up to save some money. We will be going to some that we have been to already and some new.
I also signed up to be on mock jury trails. Yes, I am that weirdo that would love to do jury duty but I have yet to be summoned. I would love to be on a sequestered murder trial jury. I don’t know why, I just do. I am excited to get picked for a mock jury. It pays $10 per case and each is about 2 hours to complete. This is all done online, so I don’t have to go anywhere but to my laptop.
Brian bought a cricut to make buckets that light up for campsites!
In the mean time, we are just enjoying the peace, quiet, and the sunsets for the last month and a half that we are here.
