We have arrived in Maine, our summer 2024 home. It was a little hectic getting here, but we managed. Brian worked his last day on Saturday while I packed up the camper. We left Sunday morning and our first stop was the Highway 21 Drive-in. We loved it the last time we were there on our way to Florida, so we stayed again. We bought some food from the concession stand and ate. We started to watch the newest Ghost Busters, but there were bugs so we went inside and tried to watch through the window, but it was not very visible through a screen. By time the second movie came on it was less bugs and we were able to go back outside for Civil War. Also we were the only camper there so we had the place to ourselves once the movies were over.
Our second stop was at another Harvest Host called Secret Garden Bees. This is a honey bee farm in North Carolina. We were the only ones at this location as well. It was a nice little spot. The owner is a veteran and has a HUGE plot of land. There was a little shop and there were ducks and chicken on the property.
Our third stop was at the Battlefield Country Store in Virginia. We stayed here last year as well. We love this place. They have good food and ice cream and it is peaceful, well this time is wasn’t. There was camper there and they ran their generator ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT. There is no need for that. Anyways, we got a sandwich called The Winston for dinner (sliced Kettle Fried Chicken, Mozzarella, Homemade Alfredo Sauce on Garlic Cheddar Bread) OMG it was amazing! Brian got a banana caramel milkshake and I got a banana split.
Our next stop was at a farmers market in New Jersey, but they were closed so we didn’t get to purchase anything. They had a huge field for horses and Moxxi and Tucker sat on the bed and looked out the window at them. There was a pig, but we couldn’t get close to get a good picture, but he is in one of the pictures below. And of course farm dogs stared until we got Moxxi and Tucker over to say hi.
On our way to our fifth stop is where is got frustrating. We went from New Jersey to a KOA in Massachusetts. There was a fire on 95 so it detoured us to a parkway that Trucks and RV’s were not allowed on. Thankfully, we pulled over on a side street in a small city and a cop just happened to be parked there too, so we asked him, and he got us directions. We got back onto 95 after this fire so we were good, then our phones started going off, accident reported on 95, closed from exit 13-15…. we got on at 6. Thankfully, this time our gps took us on a route that was safe, but we sat in a good bit of traffic for a while. This was a five and a half hour drive that ended up being almost 9 hours. To say that we were frustrated and exhausted would be an understatement. The KOA had a dog park, so we took the dogs and threw a tennis ball to Tucker to tire him out.
The next day, we went from Massachusetts to Maine. This was a better trip. Brian got his Burger King fix in before we get to our campground (there is not a Burger King anywhere near where we stay). The rest area/service plaza we stopped at had a Cake Boss vending machine. I thought that was interesting.
We made it to Maine, it was a long six days of travel, but we made it without killing each other. It was great weather, mostly in the 80’s, the whole way up until we hit Massachusetts. Now we are back in cold weather (high 50’s low 60’s during the day and 40’s at night). We miss our sunsets from Florida, but I gotta bring home that bacon so we can keep enjoying this life.
